A Pioneering 1 Cimi

The day-sign 1 Cimi opens the next 13 days in the Mayan Calendar on 4th June 2013 at sunset. As we enter this cycle I remember Frederick Catherwood, the pioneering explorer of Mayaland, who was born on the day 1 Cimi.

The Mayan sign Cimi is about death and ancestral knowledge as passed down through the crystal skulls (see our previous post The 13 Crystal Skulls). In alignment with his Mayan birthday Catherwood played an important role in rescuing the overgrown remains of the Mayan civilisation at a very crucial time. He also inspired many future explorers to come and discover the ancient Maya wisdom.

In the early 19th century Frederick Catherwood (1799-1854) accompanied the American ambassador and writer John Lloyd Stephens (1805-1852) who was impulsed to explore the jungles of Yucatan. Catherwood sketched many beautifully intricate drawings of their discoveries.

They both were soon very impressed by the highly elaborate architecture they found in Yucatan in various ancient Maya cities such as Copan, Chichen Itza, Uxmal, Kabah, Labnah and Tulum.

For the first time it was put forth with stunning evidence, that these monuments were the vestiges of a great civilisation built by the people of this land and not by an outside party from the Old World. They deplored that these remains had been so undermined by the Spaniards in their chronicles!

The breech that these pioneering adventurers opened is very recent. This explains the eagerness that later researchers have shown when studying the advanced Mayan civilisation and its long kept secrets. Nowadays Maya wisdom, particularly their accurate knowledge of vast cosmic cycles, are very precious to us in our current times.
